1. Brush your teeth twice a day
Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste. When brushing at night time, spit out after brushing and do not rinse so that the fluoride stays on your teeth longer and protects them even more.
2. don't brush after eating
After eating or drinking any acidic food, wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth. Acidic food and drink, such as juices, smoothies and fruit, temporarily soften your tooth enamel. Try not to brush straight after eating these things, or you could end up damaging the protective layer on your teeth. Drinking a glass of water immediately after acidic food/drinks dilutes the acid and helps minimise erosion of your teeth.
5. reduce your sugar intake
Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks between meals. It's not necessarily how much sugary food/drinks that you have, but rather how often you have them! To help your teeth to fight against decay, try to keep sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes and only have one snack a day. Remember to try and avoid sugary snacks between meals because these do more harm, as there is less saliva flowing after a short snack than after a meal.
6. drink water, eat cheese or chew sugar-free gum after eating or drinking sugary foods
Water rinses sugar and acid away. Cheese helps to neutralise acid and chewing sugar-free gum helps to clean the mouth, so try to do this after consuming sugar. How about changing your biscuit with your tea or coffee for a piece of toast (without jam!), or a crispbread?
7. visit your dentist regularly
It is very important that you have dental check-ups as often as recommended by your dentist (usually every 6 months), to keep your mouth healthy. Regular visits helps us adopt a more preventive approach to your dental care.
8. be mouth aware!
Check your mouth regularly and visit your dentist if you notice any changes, such as lumps, red and white patches or mouth ulcers which do not heal within 3 weeks.
