ORAL HYGIENE

Oral hygiene tips from Shrewsbury's experts

Your oral hygiene has been shown to have a great impact on your overall health. But keeping your mouth, teeth and gums healthy is easy as long as you maintain a regular brushing routine, not forgetting to clean in between your teeth. It’s never too early to get your children into good habits, and even adults could benefit from a re-examination of their dental routine in order to remove all plaque build-up and prevent gum disease, enamel erosion or abrasion.

Are you brushing correctly?

Most of us don’t really think about our technique when brushing our teeth; we often start in the same spot and rush through the motions until we get bored or our mouth 'feels' clean. This haphazard routine can cause bacteria and plaque to build up in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth, while overly vigorous brushing with firm bristles can lead to gum damage. At St John’s Hill Dental Practice we recommend that you buy a good quality medium toothbrush brush, or even better an electric toothbrush! You should also make sure that you clean every surface of your teeth, paying particular attention to where the teeth meet the gum - don't forget to clean inbetween your teeth!

Don’t forget to clean between your teeth

While brushing your teeth provides many benefits on its own, plaque and food residue can still hide between your teeth and in the gum crevice. Flossing or using dental tape once a day allows you to keep hard-to-reach areas clean, preventing particle build-up around the tooth that can lead to cavities and gum disease. For adults, we often recommend using Tepe inter-dental brushes or Tepe Easypicks for extra thorough cleaning of those hard-to-reach areas between the teeth, where gum disease can start. Our team provides tailored consultations to help identify the correct dental tape and the right size of Tepe/Tepe Easypicks for you.

Compliment your smile with a healthy lifestyle

Apart from scheduling regular appointments with your family dentist for tooth inspection and cleaning, there are many other things you can do to maintain the condition of your teeth and gums.
  • Avoid foods that are rich in carbohydrates and sugar in order to prevent the natural bacteria in your mouth from over-producing acidic by-products that can erode the enamel on your teeth
  • Restrict the frequency with which you drink juices and smoothies. When fruit is broken down, it releases fruit sugars and acids that are unkind to your tooth enamel
  • Tobacco products should be avoided as they can stain your teeth and put you at an increased risk of gum disease and oral cancer
  • Those with an active lifestyle should wear mouth guards for sport to protect against heavy impacts and accidents
Keeping a balanced diet and taking basic precautions today can go a long way to ensuring that your smile stays healthy and beautiful for many years to come.
